I love how The Shining coordinates with Doctor Sleep! Two completely different plots, but it connects back with the protagonist! Very well done.

Hello Theorists out there! I just watched the recently released Doctor Sleep last night and it's been bouncing around in my head. I know that the Film Theory channel has covered Stephen King quite a bit in the past, so I'm sure that they will jump on this movie before long. So, I thought I'd get some thoughts out on here. It's well known that the books/movies of Stephen King are very much woven together with references and direct connections. After watching Doctor Sleep, there were a few things, especially a line near the end that stood out to me which make me think that this version (not speaking for the books) of the story is linked to The Stand. Also, I do recommend seeing this movie if you are a fan of these movies. And I am going to talk about some spoilers, so reader be warned. In this movie, which is a sequel to the Kubrick The Shining movie retelling, Danny Torrance has grown up and comes across a girl who also possesses the Shining ability - Abra Stone. Abra's Shining however is much more powerful than Dan's. Her powers attract the attention of a group of evil vampire-like psychics who feed on the Shining (or Steam, as it seems to leave the body) of special individuals. Working together, Dan and Abra manage to defeat the group, luring their leader into the Overlook Hotel and using its unique residents against her. Dan has some words of wisdom for Abra before the movie closes, which is part of what got me thinking about this Stephen King universe connection. Abra wonders if there will be others like the bad guys in the movie. Dan says that there will be more people with powers, good and bad. And he says that these good, like Abra, will have the strength to "stand" against the evil. My theory is that Abra grows up to become Mother Abagail in The Stand - in particular, the upcoming miniseries remake. Yes, it may be a simple word that just happens to be the title of the book/miniseries The Stand, but I feel like this whole talk between the two is building to the events that happen in The Stand. In Doctor Sleep, we see a battle between good and evil, both sides given strange powers. We see good prevail, but with a warning that this may not be the end. The Stand shows two forces building, one of good and one of evil. Both groups are survivors of a catastrophic disease outbreak, the members being strangely immune. Whether this immunity is the same as the Shining, unclear but it could easily be brought up as the connecting link. From what I understand, there isn't a concrete reason given for why certain people survive the disease that nearly wipes out the planet. The survivors having the Shining would be a logical handwave, well logical within this universe. There is also a theme of passing the torch along in the continuing story from The Shining to Doctor Sleep and to The Stand. We see Dick Halloran open Danny up to his abilities and teaching him what he knows in The Shining. In Doctor Sleep, we continue to see Dick beyond the grave mentoring Danny and pushing him toward the right path. Dan does take some time to truly take to this destiny, but he does eventually join with Abra, showing her some other abilities that the Shining has and telling her that she needs to be open to her powers, not hiding them the way Dan did. He does push this quite a bit at the end of the movie, after he came to terms with his powers and his own role to play. And this "passing of the torch", if what I'm thinking comes to pass, will continue on in the miniseries remake of The Stand, where Abra/Abby/Abagail would reach out to the forces of good, the others with the Shining, and bringing them together. In the previous The Stand miniseries, Mother Abagail is shown to be a powerful person, despite her age catching up to her. She is able to communicate across great distances, reaching out to the survivors in their dreams and imploring them to gather to her house before moving to their eventual home in Boulder, Colorado. These powers are also demonstrated by Abra in Doctor Sleep, where she can reach out across the United States in order to watch Rose the Hat (leader of the baddies previously mentioned) and communicate with Dan. I feel like Mother Abagail's powers are a bit out of place in the original miniseries, since none of the other characters aside from the supernatural evil Randall Flagg seem to have any special powers aside from their immunity. But if the Shining exists in this world and that is the power the Mother Abagail and the others have, it makes more sense. This does also put a different twist on The Stand 's climax, where the Hand of God comes down to put an end to the evil side. This could, in this version, be a manifestation of the Shining (whether it is interpreted as God's will could be left to the interpretation of the characters), which would follow the logic of the universe. With how many other series are linked with the idea of the Shining, adding The Stand into the mix isn't much of a stretch. And Doctor Sleep 's events do build up nicely to the good/evil struggle in The Stand if they go this route with the remake. I'd love to see Game Theory cover this along with other Stephen King universe theories. Perhaps a new Stephen King timeline if these remakes/theatrical releases continue. I think that's enough rambling. If I think of anything else, I'll leave a reply below. And if you have anything to add, that'd be great. I haven't read any of the books since I was a kid and honestly don't remember them. I need to go back and do that. But these are movie interpretations and are allowed to stretch the source material a bit. So it'd be interesting to see if this is what they have in mind.

I just got done watching this movie and HOLY SHIT was I in for a treat! This movie was so damn good and this scene alone was epic af! I seriously hope they make a sequel... Abra is soooo badass. I love her. Oh man! It looks actually good, I love the shining, to me this is a welcomed sequel. And I know regardless of how the actual movie it turns out Ewan McGregor will still be fun to watch. You take a drink, the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes the man. That is a true description of the damage alcohol abuse brings. It destroys lives when used improperly.

Was this in the theatrical cut I cant tell anymore. I just watched the movie Doctor Sleep and it contains a lot of truth. Like a lot of Hollywood movies, there is truth mixed with misinformation. Truths in the movie include the abduction and sacrifices of children. In the movie, this cult of 'people' take children with some sort of gift and they torture them and feed on their fear and pain. In reality, children are abducted and tortured by the Reptilian/Archon parasitic entities and they do feed on emotions such as fear. They feed on negative/low vibrational/low frequency energy. They can take on the form of a human temporarily as well. One of the biggest lies or misinformation in the movie is the statement that only a few are born with this gift (telepathy/telekinesis). I believe everyone is capable of great things using their mind, but the knowledge of accessing these abilities have been withheld from this.
I like to think that these monsters that feed on children keep on screaming in agony for a very very long just cant see or hear it anymore. Watch Movie Doctor SueÃo.r.e. The Shining is a classic horror/thriller and Doctor Sleep plays homage to it very neatly. It isn't much of a horror movie, but it dovetails beautifully with the Shining. If you are a fan of the Shining, and let's face it, who isn't. You'll enjoy this movie immensely. The movie is long at 2hr 30+ but it is so engrossing, it doesn't feel that long at all. Well worth your time and a very well paced movie. Good acting, a good story and it links nicely to the original film.
Slow down, it's not even October yet. Let's set our sights on Halloween first, OK? Still, I can't friggin wait. Ewan McGregor will be awesome as Danny Torrence. Link to trailer and Shining 2 sequel, Doctor Sleep update.
Really good movie, one of the best the Ive seen in a while.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried about this film, I thought the trailer looked super generic, but I also knew that Mike Flanagan is a really talented director and therefore I had faith. Faith that payed off.
While I thought the film started off a little messy, it quickly became very interesting and unsettling. It also has a very rich story with interesting characters. A few elements are very Stephen King such as alcoholism and a psychic child, that could be a good or bad thing for some people but Flanagan used them all in a very refreshing way.
The performances are exceptional in this film, I had an absolute blast watching Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat. She's charismatic, cunning, and has a sense of humanity despite doing some truly awful (and I mean really awful) things. One particular scene really got under my skin and unsettled me just by how morbid it was.
The most surprising and impressive thing this film manages to do though is combine both elements of King's novel as well as Kubrick's film, and be its own film at the same time. It's something that sounds nearly impossible but this film managed to pull it off brilliantly. No it's obviously not as good as The Shining, but it's definitely a worthy sequel.
So this is the sequel to the famous Jim Carrey's The Shining. lmfao. I really think this shouldve been part 1 & 2. Pennywise was great but the shining sequel really deserved a second chapter more than “ It” imho. Im reading the book now just to see the real ending not the ending from the shining book. We'll all look a lot worse six feet under. Don't live for this world. This is what it all comes to.
Well not a direct presentation of the book it was an adequate adaptation of it and I thought an amazing movie. Watch Movie Doctor suenos costa rica. Watch Movie Doctor SueÃo.r.
